'Off your bikes' says Royal Mail to postmen on rounds

POSTIES across Thanet are to ditch their bikes as part of Royal Mail's modernisation of the service.

The Margate depot will introduce new trolleys from March to replace deliveries traditionally made by bicycle.

Workers will load up new low-carbon emission vans with the trolleys and take them out on their rounds, meaning bulky parcels, now sent out separately, can be delivered at the same time as other mail.

A Royal Mail spokesman said change is necessary because fewer letters are being delivered while the number of parcels is increasing.

He said: "The switch to vans and trolleys will enable us to take the weight off staff's backs, we can reduce cycling accidents involving our staff, and we can eliminate the need to send out older, more polluting vans to replenish postmen and women by sending out all the mail, including parcels and special delivery, in one go."

Margate has 80 bikes and three trolleys in use at its depot on Addington Street. Trolleys will also be introduced in Ramsgate later in the year.

The spokesman claimed the decision to ditch the bikes will be made by each local office.

Royal Mail is spending £2 billion modernising its operation. Trolleys were introduced in Herne Bay just before Christmas, resulting in delivery chaos. Some people waited up to 14 days for post.

The spokesman added: "The new system will take some getting used and this was made worse by poor weather conditions."

Royal Mail says that introducing the new trolley and vans will help the company to hit its target to reduce carbon emissions by 34 per cent by 2015.

One van may mean lower carbon emissions than one existing old van. However if you have 30,000 of these each giving off an emission even if it is low, then that means a f..cking lot of emissions. It,s like a lot of bags of sh.t smell more than 1 bag of sh..t

Smoke and mirrors.
Lies and more lies.
It's becoming a habit from every "face" involved with this company....
Why give a straight answer when you can fill a page with bilge and bollocks?
we can eliminate the need to send out older, more polluting vans to replenish postmen and women by sending out all the mail
....in a van.....why not just eliminate all of the older, more polluting vans. :d'oh!

Lies are the new truth....everybody is doing it...get on board before it's too late. :cuppa
good times, bad times you know I've had my share
