THREE postal staff have been arrested on suspicion of stealing mail.

Police were called to the Warrington Mail Centre before Christmas after management’s suspicions were alerted.

Officers arrived and apprehended three men, all 22, taking them for questioning at police stations on December 16.

Two of the suspects, from Cheetham Hill, in Manchester, were released without charge by detectives.

The third was given bail until March.

The Royal Mail said the matter came to light following their own investigation into disappearing mail.

A spokeswoman refused to confirm how much had been stolen or if it was a one-off incident.

A statement said: “After a Royal Mail security investigation, an employee at Warrington Mail Centre has been bailed by police pending further inquiries.

“Royal Mail has a zero tolerance approach to any dishonesty, and that stance is shared by the overwhelming majority of postmen and women who are honest and hardworking and who do all they can to protect the mail and deliver it safely.

“We will always seek to prosecute the tiny minority of people who abuse their position of trust.”

Liverpool’s post now goes to Warrington, after the city’s sorting office closed in October.

About 600 employees moved to the site from Copperas Hill.

People in Liverpool experienced problems receiving their Christmas mail due to the freezing conditions. Icy and snowy roads meant many postal staff were unable to access side streets and a backlog built up at the Warrington sorting offices.

Mark Walsh, from Liverpool Communication Workers Union, said: “I’ve heard they’ve cleared it now.

“There’s still mail not yet through, from areas like the South or North- East, but locally everything appears to be back on track.”

Royal Mail described the theft enquiry as in its early stages, and declined to expand on the severity of the allegations.
