Manchester's largest post office was closed on the first morning after the holidays – because staff had lost the keys to the front door.

Queues formed outside the Manchester Crown Post Office on Spring Gardens from 9.30am when it failed to open. Frustrated customers were told through the glass that a member of staff had lost the keys, but several decided to wait.

A sign was posted on the door, diverting people to either Newton Street in the Northern Quarter, or Brazennose Street off Deansgate.

One customer said: "The sign on the Spring Gardens office didn't give much away but one of the staff at another post office told me the keys had been lost. It was a bit annoying to have to drag elsewhere but also rather funny to be for something as mundane as this."

The keys were found and the Spring Gardens Post Office opened at 10.45am.

A spokesman for Royal Mail said: "We apologise to customers for the late opening of Manchester Crown Office today. This was due to the office keys being misplaced."
