TOWN residents are only now receiving their Christmas mail after a major backlog for Droitwich left many homes without post over the festive period.

Snowfall in the weeks leading up to Christmas brought the town’s sorting office at Berry Hill Industrial Estate to a grinding halt to the dismay of many residents.

Mr Peter Richards, of Park Way, waited more than a week before walking to the sorting office himself to collect his post.

He said: “On Thursday, December 23 I drove to Berry Hill sorting office as we were missing about thirty cards, some from our children and grandchildren. Whilst queuing outside with other people trying to pick up mail I was told that they similarly hadn't had any mail for six or seven days.

“We are still missing about thirty cards from family and friends and we still haven't received the photographs of our grandchildren.

“Yes, we had heavy snow, but so did my relatives in Cardiff, and their mail got through. They even had a Sunday delivery on December 19. What's happened to Droitwich's Mail?”

Town MP Peter Luff also said he had received many complaints from Droitwich residents and from some other parts of his constituency. A number of people complained that other deliveries made it through except the mail.

He said he has written to Royal Mail chief executive Moya Greene and is awaiting her reply.

A Royal Mail spokesman said: “We apologise to customers who experienced delays to their deliveries as a result of the severe weather across many parts of the area in the run up to Christmas.

"Our postmen and women pulled out all the stops to get the mail delivered as quickly as possible and continued to work extremely hard to restore normal service as the conditions improved.”
