Christmas gifts lost after being left in recycling bin

A postal worker left a Cardiff family's Christmas gifts from the US in their recycling bin - only for it to be emptied before they arrived home.

Jim and Lisa Warman returned from a shopping trip to find the note saying the parcel was left in their green bin but they were too late to find them.

Royal Mail has apologised, saying "correct procedure wasn't followed".

Cardiff council has also checked its recycling facilities but could not find the presents.

"We complained to Royal Mail and they agreed it should never have been left like that," said Mrs Warman from Pentrebane.

"Who thinks that leaving presents in a bin is a good idea?

"We've been exchanging gifts with our relatives in America for over 20 years and this is the first time we haven't got them.

"It is very upsetting for everyone involved," said Mrs Warman.

Daughter Louise, 19, said the parcel containing clothes, jewellery and DVDs was sent by family friends in Texas.

"I was gutted," she said. "It ruined Christmas because we've unwrapped those presents every year since I was a little girl."

A Royal Mail spokesman said: "We take the security of our customers' mail very seriously and have in place procedures to ensure large or signed for items are received by the intended recipient securely.

"On this occasion it appears that the correct procedure wasn't followed for which we apologised sincerely to Mr and Mrs Warman.

"We have launched an internal investigation into the incident and will be in touch with the customer once this is complete."

I would go off my rocker if any delivery firm ever did this with a parcel for my home address. Call me heartless, but unless the postie had written authorisation from the residents and/or their line manger to do so, they deserve everything that comes their way through the disciplinary procedure!

I do it meself sometimes, BUT, I take a butcher's at what's in the bin first.....if the bin looks like it's been recently collected, in goes the packet, if not the packet's coming back with me

Never in bins, ever, because that's where you put rejects and rubbish, not parcels and packets.

Ditto, ne'er in bins. I'll sometimes leave with neighbours, even if it's frowned upon, but only when I have some kind of 'relationship' with both households. There are also a few unofficial places that I leave parcels, again I probably shouldn't but I am a pretty fair judge of what I consider to be a safe place to leave something, and if it isn't acceptable to me then it's 739 time. Oh, and then I have the people who ask me to leave stuff in their bin. They still find it hard to believe when I p739 them, even when I explain that a bin is frequently emptied.

mmmm Strange one. Surely the bin was left down the drive or something, which should tell the postie that the bins are about to be collected? Bin men never collect from UP the driveways these days. Not a good day for anyone concerned.

Get real! Hermes couriers leave over 50% of their deliveries in wheelie bins. The rest go over gates, into sheds, greenhouses, dog kennels, BBQ's etc ......

These days, you get what you pay for.
