A KENDAL postman believes he may have solved the mystery of the infamous big cat sighted around the South Lakesarea.

Richard Ward found a dead feral tom cat, weighing 18lbs, lying in the middle of the A65 between Kirkby Lonsdale and the M6.

The 51-year-old said people were slowing down to look at the body of the animal, which was ‘as big as a fox’.

“If that was running and someone was seeing it in the half-light, they could easily think it was the big cat,” said Mr Ward. “I was just amazed when I saw it.”

‘Big cats’ have been reported over the years at Beetham Caravan Park, the Winster Valley, Ings, Shap, The Helm, Kendal and most recently at Yealand Conyers.

apparently people with more money than sense used to buy these " exotic " animals , then I think ? in the 70's these animals were deemed to be unlawful so they were set free . Think ? ...they could bought from Harrods ?

They reckon these animals could roam the countryside and it was possible that one big cat could meet a female big cat and they'd breed , hence the ones that apparently exist now . They don't usually bother anyone as they're shy of human contact . I believe , not a million miles away from Cumbria , some Farmers welcomed them as they kept the likes of Deer & foxes down in forest / woods areas .

hmmm. Well my cat is 15lbs and she's just a moggy afaik. She is quite a bit bigger than other cats I've seen. Even before she got older and fatter (like her mum :D ) Wonder if she would pass for one of these cats. She seems to chase plenty of foxes from the garden
