The Sunday Telegraph has reported that Allan Leighton, the ex-Asda chief being touted as the possible head of a private-equity-owned J Sainsbury, led a previously undisclosed attempt to buy the supermarket chain in February 2005.

Leighton might be able to take that role, because he only works 1 or 2 days a week for rm, but he wont leave a the gravy train hes on now, we got £400 quid bonus last may, ive heard he got 1.8 million, greedy b****ard.

The poor bloke must be knackered - he has Directorships with Dyson, Lastminute.com, Scottish Power and Cannons to name but a few.

He is currently Deputy Chairman, Selfridges & Co; Chairman, British Home Stores Ltd; Director, George Weston Ltd; Non Executive Director, BskyB; and Vice Chairman of Leeds United.

If he rubs his companies like his football team then we're all f****d.....

He is responsible for the performance of every delivery round, mail centre and Collection hub etc...

His bonus as a proportion is actually smaller than yours!

He is responsible for making sure every item gets where it should go, you have to look after approx. 2500 (correct if I'm way out) a day. He is responsible for circa. 80 million.

If you think this rationale is a pile of cr*p then write back.

Maybe if they knew what they were doing then perhaps the 'massive logisitcal exercise' would not be so massive,and that's just the tip of the iceberg.

Are you talking about big Al of little Adam?anyways my answer would be the same for both of them.
No doubt they both negotiated their salarys,and no doubt they both sleep well at night with their high interest bank accounts earning them more cash.
It's very easy to sit at a board meeting giving out orders to their lackeys 'cut this','cut that'.
Responsible for what you said above,don't make me laugh,like they have a clue as to what actually goes on.
Their weekly or monthly sales/cuts/who did what/who did where/and who do it it and how/figures is all they know.

Maybe a bit of nievity from me again with my post,but i guess you know that about me anyway,but NO i don't think they're worth what they're being payed.

Sitting at a board meeting being told this and that and then saying 'yes' that's a good idea do that.

Don't get me wrong, living in a utopia where you get paid the same regardless of what job you do is something I agree with. However, we both live in a capitalist society that differentiates between different jobs.

As a former boss of mine once said if you don't like it go somewhere else.

Adam Crozier is eseentially running a private business (which is currently 100% shareholder owned by the Government) to call him a civil servant is incorrect on this basis. He is there to provide a service to customers as stated on the 'stamp' when they buy it (who is the customer?). He is also responsible for delivering financial targets amongst others.

As for cutting jobs, its not as easy and straight forward. He learnt a harsh lesson just over 3 years ago when he encouraged 3000 people to leave. Plenty put their hand up, but they were the talented ones, one's with specialisit skills, and the one's who could easily get similarily paid jobs in other sectors. The remaining one's were people who could not afford to leave, and many who could not wish to get the same pay outside of RM.

Over the last 10-20 years the level of management increased and stifled the company. It has only been right to get rid of those layers.

I think he is just about justified in his salary because he has to take both the flak and the credit when things go well or badly. He will ultimately get the sack if targets are not met (are they fudged?). When have you seen a postman getting the sack at the end of the year for poor performance? Yet in the packet there 100% gauranteed bonus's.

All I'm asking is that we see the picture for all sides and not lay into him prely on the absolute amount he is paid, as this distorts the picture!

I saw one get sacked 3 weeks ago for constantly being late - no bonus for him (or us this year I think).

Anyway this topic was about Big Al and his shopping trolley.

I went to a talk by him in November and he was previously approached to take over the NHS, so think yourself lucky!

With the greatest respect, you're talking absolute bo**ocks.

Leighton and Crozier get paid, regardless of the state of the company. One million a year for sitting on yer backside year after year, after year.

They're the same as any other boardroom member anywhere - if the company does well, it's all down to them and their hard work.

If the company goes t*ts up, it's everyone's fault, except theirs!

When Leighton took over, we had an industry that had made 21 years continuous profit, peaking at over £500 million.

Within a year to 18 months, that same industry was £500 million in the red. £1 billion disappeared virtually overnight.

Within 3 years, that same industry had, ahem, 'turned the corner' and was back to £500 million in profit.

Business guru supreme, or creative accountancy?

My phantom share money's on the latter..
