The Royal Mail drafted in staff on Christmas Day in an attempt to clear the backlog of undelivered mail, staff have revealed.

Hundreds of thousands of letters and parcels have not reached their destinations after Royal Mail failed to cope with the weather.

A survey by The Sunday Telegraph of Christmas deliveries suggests that seven per cent of packages posted before the Royal Mail's Christmas deadlines failed to arrive in time.

The paper sent 100 packages by first and second class post to ten locations across the country. Of those, seven packages failed to arrive by the evening of Christmas Eve.

Postal staff writing messages on a web forum for Royal Mail workers said it was the most chaotic situation for decades, claiming there were too few drivers to deliver the post.

"This Christmas has been the biggest shambles in my 18 years service," one said on the website.

This christmas has been the biggest shambles in my 18 years service.Here are the main points for me.

1.Lack of staff to cover spare vans.(lack of staff all year round aswell)

2.Vans that are spare not taking any specials or tracked.(so driver have to do them all,and then a 4hr rural)

3.Mail coming late from m/c's making late out on delivery.

4.Being questioned about o/t every day.(ffs its christmas)

5.Christmas eve being the busiest day so far.(thanks RM i dont really want to get home to see my kids)

If this is the future comrades i fear for us.Impossible workloads and threats when you can't complete.I personally can't see it getting any better,in fact I see strike action looming.

Can only agree with above comments,Personaly I Feel RM Deserve a award and national recognition,for having such incompetent Management,who says except the CWU Private companies would destroy RM.

I feel sorry for all the people who will get late mail after XMAS.

The bad weather has been a Godsend for RM,it is the beleif of many in my office,the bad weather was a great excuse for RM
To hide behind to cover up such a diabolical service over the Xmas period.

Some days with fresh snow on the ground we wanted to go out and were not allowed to,other days when everywhere was like a ice rink with dangerous paths ,we were expected to complete our delivery as if it were a normaly day !!

Also seems to be a RM campaing to get CWU reps to cross the line with 1 area rep already mentioned on here,I know of other reps been offered middle management roles starting at £30k a year,way above exsisting linos wages in our office.

One said some drivers were being offered £35 an hour to work yesterday in an attempt to tackle the problem.

Today drivers were offered to work xmas day to deliver packets as they know they wont be clear,Office is overloaded.
£35 per hour.
Not sure how many are going in.
Im not,Would you?

Is it really a story backed up by facts or is it just some lazy-arsed journalist "phoning it in" after trawling RMC for half an hour?
Did they really send 100 parcels to 10 locations...?
If they did and 93 made it on time it's nothing short of a Christmas miracle.
