Royal Mail postman David Melpass suspended after clashing with boss over health and safety

A POSTMAN has been suspended for swearing at his boss after being stopped from delivering Christmas mail on safety grounds.

David Melpass, 47, told his manager, “f****** suspend me”, after he tried to defy a delivery ban because of icy conditions.

The dad-of-one, from Walsall, West Mids now fears he’ll be fired. Royal Mail is investigating.

Unless Mr Melpass gets more in tips than his annual salary, his actions defy belief. :confused

Seems simple but I think suspending deliveries is just as much to do with clawback savings as H&S. Conditions were just as bad this week as previous but no suspension. I think it would be a good idea if the union kept a record of when, where and why deliveries are suspended to see if this might be so. I know of a manager who has jumped on the clawback train with relish and these cancelled deliveries aren`t excactly consistant.

Unfortunately some people get very stressed by the idea of having 2 (or more ) days mail to deliver.
Being prevented from going out on delivery just means a bigger problem tomorrow, and without any extra resources to cope.
The societies of consumption and squandering of material resources are incompatible with the idea of economic growth and a clean planet.

Why would lack of extra resources impact on us?
Being prevented from going out on delivery does not mean a bigger problem for delivery staff...only for management.
It is time members realised this.
Two days mail to deliver does not mean i will be carrying heavier bags or working any longer.
good times, bad times you know I've had my share

In our office we were told that no one was to go out on deliveries.....................................unless they wanted to.

Took the responsibility off of manager and onto staff yet some still went out.
The time has come to stop turning the other cheek, time to stop shaking our heads in bitter dismay, time to stop mumbling our angry words.
The time has come for union.

Quite agree Fishtank. Contract hours, bags within weight limits, correct mode of delivery, correct finishing principals = non stressed postman=headache for highly paid managers. Too many desperate to appease management and customers alike, the majority who dont give a toss.

Unfortunately most people just want a quiet life. They don't want to be constantly arguing with managers about what they think they can and can't do on any given day.
That's why we have members starting early and working for free, or working over and not claiming o/t.
Unfortunately they also expect their rep to be able to solve all these problems and this is an unrealistic expectation.
Some have begun to understand - more work indoors = less work outdoors, but certainly in my DO they are still in a minority.

It would if he wasn't a postman. Everything is possible in this job.
Have seen and heard very similar, to me it beggars belief but it's all too common.
Hope he keeps his job. Then starts to use his brain.

Yes, and there's no logic in what we're told - don't go out on days when the conditions are a lot better than days when we deliver as normal.
