MP itemises complaints to Royal Mail chiefs

Dundee East MP Stewart Hosie has raised complaints received over Royal Mail delivery problems in Dundee with senior management.

In a conference call with Julie Morrison, head of external relations and Terry Allan, lead delivery sector manager for Dundee, Fife, Perthshire and Central, he itemised dozens of complaints on Monday.

The Courier has reported late mail problems at Dundee East for several weeks. They began with a new delivery system that staff had difficulty implementing, and the big freeze causing another backlog.

His complaints included lost travel tickets, missing insurance documents, a missing passport, outstanding bills and invoices. One constituent had missed three job interview dates that had been sent to him.

Another constituent had received no mail since November 22, another claimed first class mail was taking over a week to reach him.

A constituent was still waiting for 16 packages posted between November 20 and 27 but received two letters on December 17, one dated December 14, the other dated November 24.

Some constituents had actually received a direct written response to their complaints from Royal Mail — which stated "there were no known problems."

Mr Hosie said, "I have received more than 60 complaints on this issue and all are supported with dates and other evidence. This is a very large number of complaints indeed.

"Many of these complaints are not directly related to the spell of bad weather. The difficulties occurred before the recent Arctic conditions arrived.

"I raised these cases with the senior management team and they committed themselves to replying directly to each one which we will forward again to them.

"They admitted what happened in Dundee East was unacceptable. While they claim to have cleared every outstanding package from Dundee East sorting office last week, they also claim the severe impact of snow and gridlock in the south has meant some suppliers have not yet put parcels into the system.

"Royal Mail informed me they believe they have fixed the fundamental problems of bedding-in the new system in Dundee, which was planned to be achieved by November 30.

"It could be the new system will operate more smoothly, but we will not be sure if it's the case until after the Christmas rush is over.

"Royal Mail has committed itself to resolving all complaints urgently and responding to the specific complaints I raised with them.

"They have also undertaken to look at urgent cases including that of the missing passport immediately," the MP said.

"I hope to work with them to ensure that all the cases raised with my office are satisfactorily resolved as soon as possible."

Might not be a UK passport, or it might be coming from a Foreign Embassy after checks, I delivered a Philippine one about a month ago.

Are they sure it's the" bedding-in of the new system" that's the
problem ? is it not perhaps the new system is ill-thought out
and poor. Would/could RM bring themselves to admit they got it
wrong.

No and the Union's very public endorsement of the modernisation programme makes it difficult for them to distance themselves either...something will have to give but it will be done quietly and with egos intact and no loss of face.
