A POPULAR Paignton postman who was mysteriously injured has thanked his neighbours and friends for their support.

George Aitto, 32, from Osney Crescent, needed stitches and staples to the head injury he suffered on Friday night.

But he and the police still do not know what happened before he was found lying in a pool of blood in Fisher Street.

George said he cannot remember the incident. He had travelled from Exeter by train just before 11pm after visiting friends and bought a pizza before walking home.

George says the next thing he remembers was waking up to see a pool of his blood on the floor. Initially police thought he may have been stabbed

"I can't remember anything . I didn't see any knife. I don't think it was a knife. I think I was hit and then fell over.

"I have a deep cut from my forehead to my scalp."

George, who is originally from Kenya, has worked as a postman for nine years. He worked for two years in Northwood, London before moving to the resort seven years ago.

He said: "There was a bang of me being hit, or me hitting the floor. It might have been a wall or a piece of wood with sharp edges.

"But I want to say thank you to all of the people who have helped me, especially to my neighbours who have helped me. I just want to say thanks to everybody, especially the police for all their help."

George is a member of the Luo tribe and also speaks Swahili.

A police spokesman said: "We are looking into the circumstances to establish whether an assault has taken place.

"We have spoken to the victim and we aren't ruling out the possibility that he may have fallen over."

Anyone with any further information is asked to call the police on 08452 77744 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
