Severe weather conditions in the UK – Postal update

The UK is experiencing severe weather conditions with ice, snow and sub zero temperatures. While we turn up the heating, put on more layers of clothing and fight with the cats for the best spot near the heater (the cats always win!), our postal workers are out there battling the elements and doing the best they can to deliver our mail.

Fresh falls of snow and icy road and pavement conditions are disrupting some mail services in some parts of the UK. Most affected by the weather conditions are parts of Scotland, North East England and rural parts of South East England and Wales.

Mail deliveries and collections

Delivery of mail
Deliveries are taking place as usual in most parts of the UK today. In some parts of the country, particularly in rural areas, snow and ice are making roads dangerous and access for postal staff difficult or unsafe. Royal Mail will resume delivery to customers as soon as they can deliver safely.
Volumes of mail and mail delivery times may be subject to some changes during this period.

Collection of mail
Mail from Post Office branches, customers and post boxes is collected wherever post vehicles can safely access buildings and post-boxes. In areas affected by snow and ice, collections may be at a slightly different time than usual as driving conditions may be difficult or alternate routes are taken.

Picking up mail from your local office
Callers offices remain open in all areas so customers can collect items the postal staff have tried to deliver and for which a ‘sorry… you were out’ card was left. This also allows customers who collect mail from PO boxes or using mail collect services to continue doing so, although the usual mail availability times may fluctuate slightly.

Business collection customers:
If you are a business collection customer and your mail cannot be collected, you can take your mail to any Post Office or regional mail centre if you can get there safely.

Suspension of the Special Delivery™ guarantee
Whilst Royal Mail is continuing to accept, prioritise and expect to deliver the majority of Special Delivery™ items, the changing weather conditions mean they cannot guarantee the delivery of all items the next day in all areas. Therefore, in order to provide customers with clear guidance, the Special Delivery™ guarantee has been removed for items posted from Wednesday 1st December 2010. The guarantee of delivery will be restored as soon as Royal Mail can honour the service promise in full.
