Union bosses step in to tackle postal workers’ fears over Christmas chaos

Union bosses are stepping in to sort out problems which postal workers fear will bring Christmas deliveries to a grinding halt.

Workers at the Wardley sorting office, which serves Walkden, Swinton, Boothstown and Little Hulton, claim they are struggling to deliver mail under a new regime and have called in their union leaders to mediate.

New working practices are being rolled out across the country, which staff at Wardley sorting office, on Shield Drive, on the Wardley Industrial Estate, say is stretching the system to breaking point.

And they fear it will breakdown completely during the Christmas rush. A postal worker, who wanted to remain anonymous, said: "The routes we are being asked to do are often far away from each other and it’s impossible to complete both rounds in one go.

"The result is that often the postmen and women have to bring undelivered mail back and try again the next day.

"Under the new system, we cannot guarantee that first class mail or special deliveries will be delivered within the normal time.

"And with the run-up to Christmas, the situation can only get worse."

Jim McNicholls, from the Greater Manchester branch of the Communication Workers Union, confirmed that he was aware of workers’ concerns and the union was hoping to iron out any problems.

He added: "My understanding is that this is now week four of the new way of working and the introduction of the new delivery rounds at the depot.

"There has been a reduction in the number of rounds by 12. The majority are now being carried out by a team of two in vans.

"There have been some difficulties with the way the rounds have been constructed."

A Royal Mail spokesman said: "Royal Mail is making significant changes to its delivery operation in offices across the country as part of its £2bn investment and modernisation programme.

"We urgently need to respond to the growth in electronic communications and the decline in mail volumes, which in the UK means there are now 16 million fewer letters posted every day compared with five years ago.

"The operational review has been undertaken on the basis of a national agreement reached by Royal Mail and the Communication Workers Union, endorsed by postmen and women in a national ballot. We are working hard to implement these changes with minimum disruption, but we apologise if any customers have experienced delays with the new systems."

Union Bosses are stepping in to sort out the f--cking great mess they have got this company in to in conjunction with their pals at RM.

Bearing in mind it took them five months to hatch up this mess, what fat chance have they got of getting it sorted for the christmas panic, oh unless they are planning ahead for the 2011 christmas panic.

But never mind, there are still so many irresponsible employees who will do anything but work as they should do. Another one today unloading D2Ds out of his personal bag, having taken them home to prep. When will these numpties ever learn.
