Mailing houses are expected to send 5.2 million pieces of direct mail to deceased people this December, a study by Millennium has found.

According to the suppression service, the run-up to Christmas will see an increase in direct marketing campaigns and email marketing but brands will damage their reputation by sending mail to people who have died.

Wasted direct mail is also bad for the environment, which is why it is important that marketers regularly check their databases.

Jo Bell, commercial director of Millennium, said: "It is absolutely vital that marketers regularly screen customer databases for deceased individuals, especially if mailing lists are used infrequently."

The news comes just days after Royal Mail introduced a new online tool aimed at helping brands and agencies carrying out direct mail campaigns.

Called Door Drops Online, it enables mall and medium-sized firms to create and book unaddressed mail campaigns online.

Anybody having a hand in producing shyte like "direct mail", should be flogged in public.
"Direct mail", a bane of modern life, if ever there was one. :evil/mad

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The dead will pay this direct mail no less attention than virtually all the live people I deliver it to. :crazy:

Lounge, you are right, the majority of people do not respond, but the minority do, and thats who these campaigns are aimed at, and now they are much more suffisticated and targeted. If they keep me in a job for the next five years, then bring them on. Yes, some of them are a pain to deliver and they add weight to the bag, but they are also good at seperating each house,s mail and can make delivery easier. Lets not cast away the hand that feed us.
