'Higher rates of job retention' among disabled employees

There are higher rates of job retention among disabled employees, which offsets the costs of spending in areas such as equipment and travel through avoiding retraining or recruitment, it has been suggested.

Kay Allen, head of social policy and inclusion with Royal Mail, made this observation during a speech at the Disability Alliance's (DA's) Better Off in Work? conference held last week (November 11th).

Discussing the group's work in making its buildings more accessible, Ms Allen stated that a survey carried out by Royal Mail found that out of 13,000 offices, 1,000 had barriers requiring attention and the group is now encouraging customers to report accessibility problems via the internet or over the phone.

She also called on the DA - a national charity dedicated to breaking the link between disability and poverty - and other organisations to work together to introduce more innovative ways of driving down costs of employing disabled people.
