West Lancs postman celebrates 40 years in the job

THE longest-serving postman in Ormskirk, Stephen Hill, has celebrated his 40th anniversary of delivering mail for local people.
It’s a job that has been something of a love affair as it is one he says he wouldn’t swap for any other.

Neither, it seems, would the residents on his round want him to, as he has become such a popular person over the years.
It could have all turned out quite differently though as, aged 20, Stephen had wanted to work behind the counter.

He said: “I was good at maths so I applied to work at BT, and also at the Post Office and Royal Mail, which was one organisation, but there were no vacancies so they offered me a job as a postman until a vacancy appeared. When it did I turned it down, I was doing a job I enjoyed and I’ve never regretted it.

“What I love about the job is meeting people. I’ve made many friends and although this is a big round I’ve chosen to stay on it because I like the area and the people.”

The affection is clearly mutual, as residents cannot speak highly enough of him.

One customer said: “He’s always been very good, especially to the elderly. When I was ill I asked if he’d post my mail each day and he did it for a long time. A lot of people have a lot of respect for him.”

Stephen has been delivering to the same round in Aughton for 25 years now, having initially worked spare rounds for four years then in Burscough, Ormskirk and Aughton for 11 years. He has seen fellow postal workers and bosses come and go, houses double in number and various aspects of the job change.

He said: “We have two days off a week now, and the pay has improved. I get more holidays because I’ve worked longer but new employees can buy two weeks in addition to their entitled four. We didn’t have that luxury.

“Houses have increased dramatically. When I started there were 39 postmen, now there are 80.”

A plaque and gift vouchers were presented by Ormskirk office bosses as colleagues and residents paid tribute to a gentleman and first class postman.
