Fire safety checks after claims of mail mountain at Dundee East office

Tayside Fire and Rescue is to inspect Royal Mail's Dundee East delivery depot after hearing concerns the mountain of undelivered mail inside is contributing to a fire risk.

Last week, the premises in West Pitkerro industrial estate introduced a new 'Way Forward' delivery system — which postal workers say makes their job impossible.

They are unable to complete new and bigger deliveries of letters and parcels on time, and have been forced to return to the depot with undelivered mail, which has since piled up.

Managers from other depots have been drafted in for sorting duties, and an emergency Sunday delivery was arranged to tackle the mail mountain.

Postal workers have described the situation as chaotic, and many of them have contacted The Courier to vent their anger.

We have also received several messages from disgruntled customers in the DD4 and DD5 postal areas frustrated at their mail not being delivered.

The situation took a new twist on Monday with the disclosure firefighters have been called in to investigate conditions inside the depot for fear the workplace is becoming so cluttered with piles of letters and parcels that a fire risk has been raised.

Station manager Bill Butterworth said they had received a call saying fire exits in the depot had been blocked and that the building had become unsafe.

"Two officers went down on Friday and we found no problem with the fire exits," he said. "We then received an anonymous complaint that some of the fire hoses they use were blocked off and that people can't get to them.

"Because we have had two complaints we will conduct a safety audit of the whole premises to ensure everything is okay."

Meanwhile, people continue to contact us sharing their experiences.

Kate Kennedy said, "I live in the DD5 area and have had only one letter delivered since October 29. I have phoned twice to complain, and the second time I phoned the agent hung up on me."

She added, "I made another complaint today via the Royal Mail website and hope that this will encourage a delivery. I live in a four-storey block of flats and wonder if this is a stumbling block for the new trolley deliveries?"

Mr A Stewart said, "I thought you might like to know that a letter posted to me in Glasgow first class on Friday, October 29, was delivered today, Monday, November 8, in Dundee.

"This gives added support to the emails from postmen about mail stacked up from the end of October and undelivered — the new system seems to be hopeless."

Actually read this article in the paper this morning and it doesn't surprise me. Dundee is a very militant office and don't take any s*** off the doms...they work their hours and thats the way it should be in every office!
