A ROYAL Mail driver had to be cut free from his lorry tonight after it left the road, hit a lamppost and rolled down an embankment.
The accident happened on the northbound carriageway of the A1 Western Bypass near to the Team Valley Trading Estate in Gateshead.
The 7.5 tonne truck came to rest on its side at the bottom of the embankment and the 57-year-old male driver was released by firefighters who removed the front windscreen.
He was taken by ambulance to the nearby Queen Elizabeth Hospital.
