Royal Mail has launched a new data service that it claims will help tackle identity fraud more effectively.

The NCOA Alert aims to flag “potentially suspicious activity” at the point of an application for a product or service.

“Suspicious activity” includes identity theft and mail interception fraud, the postal operator says.

The launch of the service comes as the National Fraud Authority estimated that identity fraud costs the UK over £2.7bn per year.

The alert file is built using Royal Mail’s national change of address insight from three years of pending, live, cancelled, and expired redirections. It also uses data from the postcode address file.
