Falmouth's MP arranges Post Office move meeting

Falmouth’s MP has waded into a row over the controversial proposal to move Falmouth Post Office to a site branded dangerous by campaigners.

Sarah Newton MP says she has met with Post Office representatives to discuss plans to move the Falmouth Post Office from its current location on the Moor to the current Spar site on Market Strand.

The third time the company has attempted the move.

The meeting at Falmouth Rugby Football Club at 6pm on Friday, October 29, will be chaired by Falmouth Town Mayor Geoffrey Evans, will allow members of the public to hear firsthand about the PO plans and ask their questions directly of the managers responsible.

Mrs Newton said: ‘‘I am well aware of the controversial nature of the proposals to move Falmouth Post Office. I am determined that local objections to the plans receive a fair hearing.

“I look forward to seeing many Falmouth residents at the public meeting on the 29, and to a full and frank discussion of the Post Office’s plans.’’ Battle lines were drawn two weeks ago when a Post Office Ltd announced a six week consultation period on proposals to relocarte the store, for the third time in six years.

If the company gets its way the move, near what one county councillor called the “most dangerous corner in town”, could take place within weeks.

The reasoning behind the move, according to Colin Pound, Post Office Ltd’s field change advisor, was that as a temporary agent has been running the current branch and the lease is short term.

He said: “This means that the service could close at short notice at any time leaving our customers in Falmouth without access to post office services. This is a situation we simply cannot allow to happen.”

However the idea has been greeted with fury by protestors who said the move would be “playing Russian roulette with lives” and that it would be a “recipe for disaster”. They have vowed to fight the proposals, as they did in 2004 and 2008.
