Royal Mail today announced the following appointments:

Matthew Lester has been appointed Group Finance Director and has also been appointed to the Royal Mail Group Board. He is currently Group Finance Director at ICAP plc, and previously held a number of senior finance roles at Diageo plc. He will be joining Royal Mail later this financial year.

John Duncan will join Royal Mail Group on 1 November as Group Human Resources Director. He was previously Senior Vice President, Human Resources at Canada Post and has 35 years experience in the postal industry. His responsibilities at Canada Post included health and safety and industrial relations, as well as strengthening both the culture and the level of employee engagement across the organisation.

Dave Smith has been appointed Chief Customer Officer for Royal Mail Group. His remit will be to strengthen even further the focus on our customers throughout the Group. His previous roles within Royal Mail Group include Managing Director of Post Office Ltd and Managing Director of Parcelforce Worldwide. He will continue to be a member of the Royal Mail Group Board.

Paula Vennells has been appointed Managing Director of Post Office Ltd and has also been appointed to the Royal Mail Group Board. She was previously Chief Operating Officer at Post Office Ltd, with responsibility for sales, customer channels and maintaining the UK’s national network of Post Offices. Paula will report to Dave Smith to ensure a smooth transition for the business in light of the proposals within the Government’s Postal Services Bill to retain the organisation in public ownership after separation from Royal Mail Group and to consider the opportunity for a mutually owned Post Office.

Chief Executive Moya Greene said: "These appointments will further strengthen the Royal Mail team and improve our focus on our customers and our people at a particularly challenging time. To be fair M. Lester has been struggling a bit lately .In 2007 his pay was a miserly £694,000 . He did manage to secure a slight increase in 2008 not sure if he had to strike or his union negotiated it ,anyway he got up to £1.46 million pay, good job he qualified for a £1.2 million bonus that year as well . Just about kept the wolves from the door , but still in order to meet his income tax and national insurance liabilities poor old Matt was forced to sell about £500,000 worth of his share options . So you see times are hard and when Matt and the rest of them tell you you need to tighten your belt for the good of the company you can be sure that they feel your pain.

John Duncan is Senior Vice-President, Human Resources.

In this role John is focused on strengthening the overall management team as well as furthering Canada Post's employee engagement objectives and cultural change.

John began his career with Canada Post in 1976 and has held progressively responsible positions within Operations, Corporate Security, Sales and Human Resources in Toronto, North Bay and Ottawa.

Prior to his current role he carried out executive assignments as Vice-President, Human Resources, General Manager, Sales - Public Sector; General Manager, Human Performance Excellence - Customer Relationship Management; General Manager, Organizational Effectiveness; and Corporate Manager, Executive Resourcing and Development.

John holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Law from Carleton University and an Executive MBA from the University of Ottawa and is currently a Doctoral candidate in the Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania’s Chief Learning Officer Program. He is a Chartered Director (C.Dir.), Certified Management Consultant (CMC), Certified Human Resource Professional (CHRP) and Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE).

He has also completed the Advanced Programs in Strategic Change Management and Human Resources Management at the University of Toronto’s Rotman School of Business, the University of Windsor’s Advanced Alternative Dispute Resolution program and the Graduate Certificate in Executive Coaching from Royal Roads University.
