Residents petition: 'Bring back Postie Paul'

HOUSEHOLDERS are petitioning to keep their postman who says he may give up his job after being pushed off his patch.

More than 60 Arnside residents have signed a petition to keep the much-loved mail man in the village after Royal Mail managers moved him from his round and split it between four other employees.

Paul Chetham, 42, said his faith in the Royal Mail was shattered by the decision and is considering quitting.

The popular postie has tramped around the area’s one in five gradients for eight years and spent the last two helping deliver letters, parcels and packages on Black Dyke Road, Plantation Avenue, Swinnate Road and Plantation Grove, in some of the steepest parts of North Lancashire.

“My round was the worst for hills but it has the best people and I loved working there,” he said. “Arnside has an older population and they need someone that will do that little bit extra.

“I chatted with elderly people and helped pick up milk bottles off the doorstep. I even helped fix their garage doors and tune their TV boxes after my shift was over.”

Sue Premru, of Swinnate Road, organised a community petition, demanding Royal Mail bosses reinstate Mr Chetham on his former patch.

“It’s outrageous to move such a friendly, reliable man who does his job so well and looks after the community while he is at it,” she said. “None of us want him to leave.”

Barbara Bentley, 66, moved into Swinnate Road with her husband David nine months ago.

She said: “Paul had such a friendly attitude, he even helped us move in during his own time – lifting boxes for us because my husband had a bad back.”

Pat Jones, 80, of Swinnate Road, said it was invaluable to have a local man you could trust.

Royal Mail said Mr Chetham had been moved when rounds at Carnforth were reorganised to improve efficiency but that all staff were trained to the same high standards, and no job losses had been caused.

"It is always gratifying when our customers recognise the hard work of their postman and the appreciation expressed by the residents of Arnside has been passed on to Paul and his manager,” said a spokesman.

tuff paul mate i was on my round for 15 years and got taken off because of the 2007 revision. re pick etc.i was the same everyone new me cups of tea etc i was like a son to them hahaha just got to get on with it tuff shi@.mate it sounds like royal mail moved ye because you were crap at your job not sayin you our read the LAST BIT OF THE TOPIC ROYAL MAIL SPOKESMAN

Why would RM feck around with his round? Wouldn't that of happened because of a CWU revision.

Just because you work for RM doesn't give you the right to stay on the same duty for the rest of your life, we have some Posties on the some cream duties for 20 odd years - roll on the revision!
