A BATTLE of Britain hero was surprised by a letter dropped round to his house this week.
Ray Warton of Kents Lane, Tatworth received a knock on the door as a postman had an unusually addressed envelope for him.
The envelope simply read “Ray Warton, Vice Chairman, Ilminster and Chard Branch of RAF Association.”
Mr Webster from Taunton, a collector of Battle of Britain heroes’ signatures, wrote the letter – asking Ray to sign a card.
Ray has found his fame spreading since his picture featured in the September 8 edition of the News in a story about the RAFA Wings Appeal.
Ray said: “A number of people have stopped me and said they have seen my photo – my fame is going from strength to strength.”
Nevertheless, the former rear gunner, who flew 21 operations over Germany in a Lancaster bomber during the Second World War, was impressed by the effort of local postmen in tracking him down.
Ray added: “The postman actually knocked on the door and asked if it was me. That took a lot of effort on his part and I really appreciate it. I think our postmen are wonderful.”
Eleanor Lobb-Miller, Delivery Office Manager said: “Our staff regard something like this as a challenge. They really do take pride in finding it!”
“It is really nice of Mr Warton to come into thank us.”
Ray would also like to get in touch with his fan from Taunton to meet him in person. If you are Mr Webster and would like to get in touch call the News on 01460-238182.

And now I'm off to give the postman responible a warning for wasting his time on a letter that he should've just stickered and sent away to be destroyed.Eleanor Lobb-Miller, Delivery Office Manager said: “Our staff regard something like this as a challenge. They really do take pride in finding it!”
