A MAN from West Molesey who received no post for a week claims a member of staff confided that the sorting office didn't employ enough workers to deliver all the mail.

Anand Moodley, 66, of Molesham Way, went to the Walton sorting office after important documents he had been expecting failed to arrive.

He said: "Staff checked and found they had six or seven letters waiting for me.

"I asked why I had not received them and the person whispered to me that they had not had the staff to deliver them.

"I told them that wasn't good enough. I am moving home and was expecting important documents."

A Royal Mail spokesman blamed delays and non-deliveries on staff illnesses.

He said: "We would like to apologise to anyone in Walton who has experienced disruption to their mail service in the last few days. This is as a result of an unexpected number of people being off due to illness.

"We expect the matter to be resolved by next week. In the meantime we are doing all we can to get the mail out on time."

A former postal worker, who worked in Elmbridge and who wants to remain anonymous, believes staff shortages are an every-day reality for Royal Mail.

"They are only recruiting part-time staff and have to get people from other offices to come in.

"We won't have a Royal Mail in 12 to 18 months time."
