Royal Mail axes 2,000 middle managers

Royal Mail is to make redundant 2,000 middle managers, many earning more than £40,000, as it simplifies its chain of command.

An announcement is expected shortly on the move, which is part of a cost-cutting plan that has slashed the workforce by 62,000 in the past eight years.

The exodus of middle managers has been agreed with the Unite union and does not involve any compulsory job losses. The managers can expect up to two years' salary in redundancy pay.

A spokesman for Royal Mail, which employs 168,500 workers, declined to comment.

News of the cuts came as the Government announced it would press ahead with controversial plans to privatise Royal Mail.

Business Secretary Vince Cable said the Government had received a report by industry expert Richard Hooper, who forecast a dramatic worsening of Royal Mail's finances in the face of stiff competition.

A senior union source said: 'We have a good understanding with the company, but the relations could be wrecked by privatisation.'

Details of how the privatisation will work will be announced by the Government later in the year.

It is clear that foreign postal operators are not interested in taking a stake in Royal Mail, so the company is likely to be forced to raise cash through a stock market listing.

Isn't there a zero missing from the headline figure?

The chickens are coming home to roost folks. First they are offered VR, which will shortly followed by compulsory redundancy [hopefully]. They have helped the execs put thier plans into action to cull staffing levels and are now becoming surplus to requirements themselves. I stated quite some time ago when personnel levels started dropping that those numnuts in the middle doing the dirty work should watch thier backs cos they will be next! WELL ABOUT FECKING TIME GOODBYE TO THE ASSLICKING COCKS!!!!!!!!!!! ahem, just wish they weren't being offered such sweet redundancy terms. What a surprise that it's much better than the workers are being offered
Union what Union? Do we have a union?

 Good. What goes round comes round! now , privatisation. Flickng through a previous post, it seemd that R/M are having trouble finding foreign companies ready to invest,
and with the perilous state of it's finances, even private investors are now balking at the though of buying in, so where to now? Stay private or go bust?
