Ash cloud hits Royal Mail target

The Royal Mail narrowly missed its target for delivering first class letters on time because of disruption to air services caused by the volcanic ash cloud, new figures showed.

The postal group said 92.6% of first class mail arrived on time in the quarter to June, just below its target of 93%, while most other targets, including those for second class and parcels, were met.

Preliminary figures for the summer showed the first class target was exceeded, said the company.

Mark Higson, Royal Mail's managing director, said: "We're very determined to keep improving our performance to ensure we consistently hit our targets and our people are very focused on delivering the best possible service at all times for all our customers."

Yeah right, last year it was entirely the fault of industrial action, now it's the ash cloud! Nothing to do with cut backs and closing mailcentres etc!

:Very Happy Aye, and when they got rid of the mail trains a few years back in favour of mail planes, it was the fog that did it! When all else fails, they just blame the postie!

I'd love to know tha QoS figures for the WA/WN/CW postcode areas now Warrington is "live". They divert several vans a day to manchester & preston etc, and still fail almost every shift, every day. QoS for this "flagship" "world class" mailcentre must be appalling. Pigeons would do better.

There's still some RM trains running. There's nowhere near as many as there once was. But there's still regular services running.

I didn't realise that there were so few left. It's just that I'd seen them going past, and assumed that they were making a comeback.

It'd make a lot of sense. Surely it'd be cheaper, and more efficient (because of the larger load capacity) to use Trains instead of Planes for inland routes. :hmmmm
