A rookie postman opened and resealed over 200 parcels which were discovered in his car.

If any of the packets had contained vouchers, 31-year-old Abolaji Oshibery confessed he would have taken them.

Royal Mail prosecutor Joanne Stephens told Manchester magistrates there had been complaints from a firm of solicitors and Marks and Spencers that cheques had not been reaching their destinations.

On May 15 a carrier bag containing 205 letters was recovered from Oshibery's car.

The court heard that he had been employed for seven months at the Manchester mail centre on Oldham Road, doing various jobs.

Oshibery of Brandforth Road, Crompton, Manchester admitted charges of theft and attempted theft and was sent to Minshull Street Crown Court for sentence on September 22nd.

Miss Stephens said he had told investigators he had been struggling to keep up with his work and had taken mail home to examine it and make a spread sheet.

Oshibery claimed he would have returned all the packets as the contents were not beneficial to him.

Shown 18 letters from a firm of solicitors, he admitted opening them out of curiosity but said he resealed them on finding the contents were people's compensation.

Miss Stephens said a cheque for £11,865 stolen from one of the letters had been cashed.

The money was later recovered and Oshibery said he knew nothing about the letter.

Peter Eatherall, defending said Oshibery had been under domestic pressure.

"What started off as curiosity has turned into serious offences and he is now facing prison," added Mr Eatherall.

He claims that he was struggling to keep up. But he can find the time to make a pointless spreadsheet about the Mail?

He also says that he'd have returned all the packets that wouldn't be beneficial to him. I other words if there's no money, or anything he can sell, then the recipients can have their packets!

I just hope that the Judge doesn't take his whining as genuine mitigating circustances. Still, at least he didn't come out with the usual "I was formerly a pillar of Society. It was just the pressure.". That's what they normally say.

Gobsmacked! Still feel there is not enough backround checks being done on new starts. I believe previous convictions can't be brought up in court, but pound to a penny many
of these thiefs have already been done for something. When I started you still had to wait several weeks to begin the job, while background was checked.

Like you I don't believe they are taking on the right candidates. The problem being this is not the job it once was and the calibre of candidates has fallen and that is a simple fact. Take a look at the recent ingress in your office, mostly part time and consequently the committment just isn't there and in some respects they can't be blamed. You get what you pay for they say, maybe they should put the union subs up
