MARYPORT WOMAN, AGED 101, DIES

A Maryport woman who was described by her family as a true diamond, has died at the age of 101.

Eleanor Short, of Steer Avenue, Grasslot, had lived in the town all of her life. She died on Sunday at The Dales Residential Home.

Speaking when she celebrated her 100th birthday, Mrs Short, who was known as Nellie, said that she was over the moon she had reached the milestone age and that it was an achievement to be the last survivor of her eight brothers and sisters.

Mrs Short also said at the time that one of the highlights of her life was seeing her great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren growing up.

Mrs Short had a variety of jobs throughout her life. She always said that her fondest memory was her short stint as a postwoman for the Royal Mail in her teens.

She said: “They sent me out one evening without a torch and it was pitch black.

“I couldn’t see who the letters were for so I posted them through one letter box and headed home. Needless to say, I didn’t do another round!”

She was awarded a certificate in 1972 from the National Executive Council of the British Legion for 25 years service for selling poppies.

Mrs Short was married to the late John, is mother of Dinah, and grandmother of Diane and the late John.

Her granddaughter Diane Stewart called her a ‘true diamond’ when she celebrated her 100th birthday, saying that she couldn’t imagine what life would have been like growing up without her.

Mrs Short’s funeral will take place at All Souls’ Church, Netherton, on Tuesday, at 10.15am, followed by cremation at Distington.
