A BRAVE post master fought armed raiders who threatened him with a gun and blade.

The masked gang of three burst into the Cefn Mawr Post Office near Wrexham yesterday morning.

The post master was seen struggling with two of them as they tried to make their escape with stolen cash.

At one point he was seen hanging onto the wing mirror of the black getaway car, trying to stop it speeding off down Crane Street just after 9.30am.

The post master was left covered in blood and with minor injuries, said neighbour Val Davies.

Police launched a major investigation and said no stone would be left unturned, as forensics were carried out at the scene.

A witness, who did not wish to be named, said: “I could hear shouts and screams and looked outside. I saw the post office man fighting with one man wearing a black mask on the road, who seemed to be armed.

“The masked man was trying to get to a black car parked nearby.

“There was a big struggle and then another masked man came out of the car and came round to join the fight and push the post master away. They were wearing balaclavas.

“They got into the car and started to drive off, but he was holding onto the wing mirror. He was not letting them get away without a fight and was trying to stop them.

“But he had no choice but to let go, because he may have hurt himself. He was shouting all the time at them and for help.”

Ms Davies, who lives nearby, added that the post master “had blood all over him”.

“He is okay, but he definitely gave as good as he got. There was no way he was going to let them get away without a fight,” she said.

A Royal Mail spokeswoman said: “We can confirm a robbery took place at Cefn Mawr Post Office at about 9.30am. The safety of our staff is of paramount importance and thankfully the sub post master was not seriously injured.

“We view this incident extremely seriously urge anyone with any information to contact the police.”

Last night police arrested a man and recovered three vehicles suspected to be associated with the robbery. A spokesman said extensive enquiries are ongoing to find two other people believed to be involved.

Superintendent Neill Anderson, said: “Thankfully the Post Office employee was not seriously injured. We are very grateful to the people who have come forward throughout the day to give vital information in and I would appeal to anyone who may have seen anything to contact us.

“Incidents such as this are very rare and North Wales Police are trained and equipped to deal with them. A major enquiry has been launched and we will not leave any stone unturned in finding those responsible.”

Anyone with information is asked to call police on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
