Postcard arrives - 78 years late!

Puzzled postie delivers postcard sent in 1932.
A postcard has been delivered an astonishing 78 years after being sent.

The card, which has a black and white picture of the Peter Pan statue in Kensington Gardens, London, was written by Miss Connie Cope. It was postmarked by the Royal Mail in Camberwell on August 20 1932.

Beeston postman, Nigel Cross, did not know where to take it when it appeared in his delivery round. He showed it to Beeston resident, Poppy Cope, because she has the same surname.

She said: "It was just astonishing. The postman turned up totally perplexed."

The card has a bright red one penny stamp with a picture of King George V on it. The postmark also includes the words The Telephone – A Sound Investment.

Connie addressed it to her sister Gwen Cope at The Sandhills, Sandy, Beds, whilst she was in the city with her other sister Murial.

Unfortunately all three sisters have since died.

The Sandhills house was near to a footbridge over the old Oxford to Cambridge railway line but it is no longer there.

Poppy showed the postcard to Cynthia Dent, who lived near to The Sandhills when she was young and remembers the family.

Cynthia said: "I was just able to throw some light on it. I would really like to know where it was found.It's a lifetime! I wasn't even born when it was posted."

The Royal Mail have given Cynthia the card because she knew the family and there are no known descendants.

You can buy used 80 year old postcards for a few pence, then pop one into any postbox and it makes a 'news' story like this they must think we were all born yesterday.
