A POSTMAN hopes he will soon be delivering copies of his first novel to homes on his Grantham round.
David York, 47, of Derwent Road, Grantham, works for Royal Mail and has just published his first book - Roman Gold, The Legacy of Quintus.
David said: “I am calling it a ‘history mystery’.
“It is funny because I couldn’t stand history when I was at school - I couln’t get my head around all the dates you have to remember.
“It was probably down to the teachers but I became hooked on history in later life. I read a book on the rise and fall of the Roman epmpire and it all grew from there.”
The story is set in the Midlands and sees the lead characters go in search of Roman treasure after seeing the spectre of a Roman soldier.
David said: “You always see people on the news saying they have found a hoard of gold.
“Whenever that happened I always thought ‘why did the people who hid it not come back for it?’
“So the story is about how it was left and how it was found.”
David was able to pay for the publication thanks to financial help from his sister-in-law.
Readers turning the first pages will find the novel dedicated to David’s sister-in-law and his wife and two children.
Fellow postman at work have also been supportive of David’s novel.
He said: “I have been working for the Royal Mail as a postman for two-and-a-half years.
“I’ve told all the lads and they are quite excited and supportive.”
David hopes his efforts will inspire other tentative would-be novelists to give it a go.
He said: “I would advise anyone to give it a try but it should come from apersonal passion. It is no good writing about something you have no interest in.
“But just give it a go and try - that’s all I did.”
The book is available from http://www.authorhouse.co.uk" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; for £5.30 and should soon be available on the Amazon website.

A right rivetting read I'm sure , but I think I'll give it a miss
David was able to pay for the publication thanks to financial help from his sister-in-law. - so he didn't quite have the leading publishers of the land trying to out bid each other.

Makes you wonder how rich his sister-in-law actually is and why she should choose to fund this project.
Maybe they are all stinking rich which makes him a "gentleman postman" (and I've got no time for them) or he has blackmailed her into financing his new hobby. I wonder what he knows that she wants to keep quiet?

The societies of consumption and squandering of material resources are incompatible with the idea of economic growth and a clean planet.

Or maybe, he's just avoiding a Publisher taking some of his profits.Lounge Lizard wrote:A right rivetting read I'm sure , but I think I'll give it a miss![]()

These days, it's comparitively easy to advertise and sell on the 'Net. All you need is the money to have copies of the book printed and bound. Why waste money paying someone to do that for you?
It was different before the 'Net really took off. You needed contacts to get your books into the shops, and advertising was expensive. But now, it's a very different situation.
