I READ with interest the article on Post Offices (Examiner, June 4).
I empathise with those who have or are in danger of losing their livelihoods due to closures, either voluntarily due to lack of business or because of supposed Network Changes forcing closures.
I choose not to undertake any business online whether it be to purchase goods and services, banking facilities or whatever. I prefer to do such things on a personal face-to-face basis.
I use both town centre Post Offices in Huddersfield regularly, only because of the closure of Birkby Post Office. The experience is often rather infuriating. Sometimes there can be about 20 people queuing and maybe only two counters operating. This is bad enough – but add to this the sales of Post Office insurance, credit cards and other services cause further delay with a scant regard for the people in the queue.
I wonder if there is a hidden agenda by Post Office Counters Ltd to close all branches in favour of an online-only service.

Where does mail go?
COULD anyone tell me where all our mail is going?
For a long time our first class mail was not reaching its destination. We started posting all our mail using the recorded delivery service (currently an extra 74p per item) as we felt that even Royal Mail would take care of a standard piece of mail that costs £1.15 to send. Not our Royal Mail.
I shall give a few examples. Important documents were sent to us using recorded delivery. They did not reach us. We claimed the replacement costs from Royal Mail. Their Customer Service department offered a miserly £39 compensation (100 x first class postage). This was to cover a claim in excess of £400. The package is definitely somewhere in the Royal Mail system. Did they offer to find the letter? No, they are leaving our private and confidential information for anyone to stumble upon.
No-one at Royal Mail cares even about the possibility of identity fraud. While complaining we sent four items of post by first class recorded mail, costing £5.15 on the same day. One item, addressed to Royal Mail, arrived the following day. One item took four days to arrive and the other two items reached their address sometime. We don’t know when as neither letter was signed for at its destination. We had to telephone to establish receipt. Yet Royal Mail claims it is attaining targets. Not in our experience.
In view of the Royal Mail continually moaning about the proliferation of email and the break up of their monopoly one would think they should offer the best service available. Not them.
This week another recorded delivery letter not signed for.
Is there serious competition out there for personal mail? I would use it. This letter via email.

Customer care
THE Examiner on Friday, June 4, had a story in which the Post Office urged us to use their services or lose them.
I assumed that’s what old folk getting their pensions, disabled and unemployed people already did.
I think the postmistress should have thought about these customers before temporarily closing the Clayton West Post Office on June 30.
I don’t know where the Post Offices are in Scissett, Skelmanthorpe or Denby Dale.
I have never been to these places and how am I going to get there? I can’t go by a bus, can’t get a taxi. No money, no Post Office.
I don’t know that I am going to do after June 30. Could the Royal Mail do something better for the customers near the village?

Thanks for generosity
