DUNDEE WORKER RECEIVES RECOGNITION FOR HIS BRAVERY

A DUNDEE postman received a First Class People Award yesterday at a ceremony in London.

Dundee West delivery office postman Darren Lee received his award in the bravery category after winning the Scottish regional title.

The 40-year-old, from Myrekirk, was on his rounds when he found an elderly and disorientated woman wandering in the rain.

When he took her home, he found the gas cooker in her home switched on but unlit.

Mr Lee stayed with the woman until helpers arrived to care for her before continuing his deliveries.

Postman Graham Watson, from Kemnay, in Aberdeenshire, also received an award. Royal Mail managing director Mark Higson praised the commitment of the 41-year-old, from Leslie Place, Kemnay, at the event in Haberdasher’s Hall.

The award, handed out to unsung heroes of the postal service, was presented by Christine Bleakley, from BBC TV’s The One Show.

Mr Watson, who works at the Inverurie delivery office, won the Scottish regional heat in the fundraising category of the annual awards.

Over the past four years, he has raised more than £10,000 for charities including Breast Cancer Care.

In 2006, he volunteered to travel to Ukraine with a lorry-load of relief supplies provided through fundraising efforts.

The annual accolades are awarded on the basis of nominations from customers, who have a chance to name postal workers as “unsung heroes” deserving recognition through the Royal Mail scheme.

Royal Mail Group Scottish director Ian McKay said: “Because our people make daily deliveries to all 2.5million addresses in Scotland, they will often be the first to discover an accident, fire or someone taken ill.

“Customers do turn to the familiar face of their postman or woman for help if things go wrong.”
