Post Office robber sentenced to 'indefinite imprisonment' loses his appeal

A NEATH man involved in a brutal post office robbery has failed to have his potentially lifelong jail sentence overturned.

Ryad Kaisar Morgan, 29, and his brother Richard, attacked Andrew Ball when he arrived to open Briton Ferry post office on May 6 last year.

Ryad, armed with a samurai sword, and Richard, who had a starting pistol, tied Mr Ball up with electrical cable, before forcing him to tell them how to open the safe. Mr Ball was told he would be shot if he did not comply. The pair made off with £26,000.

The next day Ryad, of Giant's Grave Road, Briton Ferry, was arrested, but denied any involvement in the offence.

He was convicted of robbery at Swansea Crown Court and sentenced to indefinite imprisonment for public protection.

He was told he would have to serve at least six years behind bars before he could apply for parole and would only be freed once the authorities were convinced the danger he posed to the public had passed.

Richard Morgan, of Villiers Street, Port Talbot, admitted robbery and was jailed for seven years. He did not appeal.

Mrs Justice Rafferty told London's Criminal Appeal Court that Ryad had 10 previous convictions for 21 offences, committed between 1996 and 2008.

Two of those were for causing grievous bodily harm, and one for causing actual bodily harm.

His latest crime, she said, had been premeditated and it was clear that watch had been kept over the post office in advance of the raid.

Ryad had also continued to deny his involvement in the offence, despite "clear evidence, not least his own brother's admission", the judge added.

"He had shown no remorse and was clearly a danger," she concluded, dismissing his appeal.

Mr Ball suffered a broken nose and a split septum, and was left needing corrective plastic surgery.
