A POSTMAN who hoarded thousands of items of undelivered mail over almost five years could face jail.

Christopher Marren piled up unopened letters, parcels and junk mail at his mother's home in Lincoln and in a shed and a coal bunker at his then girlfriend's house in the city.

Lincoln Magistrates' Court heard some recipients had died since the mail was originally sent.

Marren – a former lance corporal in the army who now lives with his mother – had hoarded some of the mail after accidentally picking it up from the depot before beginning his rounds in Birchwood.


Royal Mail subsequently resent the undelivered mail – which included details about hospital appointments as well as greeting cards and sympathy cards.

They were forced to send out detailed explanations to the households as officials at the firm sought to limit the damage from the incident.

But the court was told that Marren's hoard was only discovered when a council official inspected his ex-partner's home when she moved out.

Prosecutor Beris Brickles said more than 3,500 items of mail had been found after Marren was rumbled.

He told magistrates that court action was not always necessary in such situations – but explained why it was in this instance: "The sheer number of items not delivered and the time over which these offences were committed.

"Some of these items are five years old.

"But the thing is, Royal Mail are not the losers – the members of the public are the losers.

"They lose trust in Royal Mail if mail is not delivered."

Marren, 32, of Syston Grove near Brant Road in Lincoln, admitted two charges of intentionally delaying delivery of mail.

Leo Pyle, in mitigation, told the court that Marren had picked up some of the mail by mistake – and decided to hide it instead of admitting his errors.

He said Marren had been feeling depressed partly because the woman he left the Army to be with had since left him.

He was also still depressed about the death of a girlfriend in a car crash when he was 17.

"He takes full responsibility for these items," he said.

"This is the first opportunity and the first hearing of the case, and he pleads guilty.

"He lives with his mother and now works as a landscaper."

Magistrates adjourned sentencing until May 13 in order for probation reports to be prepared.

But before releasing him on unconditional bail, they warned Marren he could face a jail sentence.

Can someone explain this to me, did he pick up somebody elses bag?? I'm totally lost as to how this could have amounted to anything more than 1 or 2 missorts.
