POSTMAN Paul Izard has scooped an award after he helped out an elderly man who had collapsed.
In June last year the 44-year-old was doing his round in Portchester when he saw 94-year-old Tom Wilkins, who had collapsed and was leaning against a wall in Kelvin Grove.

He went straight to his aid and stayed with him until an ambulance arrived, and he then helped him back into his home.

Paul, of James Close in Bridgemary, said: 'I was doing my round in my van. When I came in to Kelvin Grove I noticed two pensioners leaning against a low brick wall.

'I thought there was something not right. He had collapsed and couldn't go any further.

'With the help of the other man we tried to get him back but he became a deadweight and we were struggling.

'A neighbour called for paramedics and we got a chair outside and put him in it while we waited for the paramedic.

'After that we all helped him get back inside. I didn't even think about it.'

Last month Paul was nominated for the award and he has found out he's won the regional award and he will now be put forward for the National FInals and he will attend the ceremony in London on May 24.

'I was quite shocked by it,' he said.

'The depot manager called me in and asked me for a word in his office. I thought 'what have I done'. I had forgotten all about it.

'I'm chuffed. I'm really happy about it. I'm not one to get awards that often.

'I didn't expect it, I didn't even think about it. All this attention is a bit strange to me.'

Mike Dalton, Royal Mail's head of external relations, said: 'We have thousands of first class people working for Royal Mail and the shortlisted candidates are excellent examples of postmen and women who have made a real difference to people's lives.'
