Brave postie selected for unsung hero award

A POPULAR Droitwich postman has been shortlisted for an unsung hero award following an act of bravery while out making deliveries.

Pete Hughes, from Worcester Mail Centre, spotted one of his customers being attacked by robbers while collecting mail from a village near Droitwich.

Brave Mr Hughes drove his van at the robber in an attempt to distract him. The assailant and his two accomplices fled taking the woman victim’s briefcase and keys. The determined postie then tried to follow their car but couldn’t catch up with them. He was praised by police for his actions.

Following the incident Mr Hughes has been named amongst eight exceptional regional posties shortlisted for a Royal Mail ‘1st Class People Award’ 2010.

Customers and staff were invited to nominate Royal Mail people who they thought were the unsung heroes of the community, first class charity fundraisers or who performed a public spirited act of bravery whilst out on their deliveries.

Royal Mail’s head of external relations, Mike Dalton, said: “We have thousands of first class people working for Royal Mail and the shortlisted candidates are excellent examples of postmen and women who have made a real difference to people’s lives.

“They are the unsung heroes who customers and Royal Mail feel deserve some extra recognition and appreciation for their efforts. We congratulate them on this fabulous achievement and wish them all good luck for the regional final.”

Judges will choose three regional winners from the eight shortlisted candidates. The three will then be invited to attend a national awards ceremony in London on May 24, when they will each receive a cheque for £500 and a trophy.

National winners in the three categories will also be announced and each receiving £1,000. One of the winners will be given the overall “Postman of the Year” title and will win £3,000 for a holiday and spending money.
