ME sufferer Eric Smart returned home to Aberdeen following his round-the-world cycle having clocked up 21,452 miles.

An Aberdeen charity cyclist has returned home following an epic two year round the world trip.

What makes Eric Smart's achievement all the more remarkable is that he suffers from the debilitating condition ME which leaves some sufferers too tired to even get out of bed.

Part-time postman Erik left Aberdeen in May 2008 to cycle to Adelaide in Australia but when he got there seven months early, he decided to extend his trip.

Eric said: "I still had some money, months and muscle so I thought, well I’ll just cycle home - it's been wonderful.

“It was to celebrate my recovery from 20 years of ME and to raise money and awareness for ME.

“We have all done very well, the support has been amazing, friends, colleagues from Royal Mail - it’s been immense.”

Eric's parents spoke of their pride in seeing their son complete such a monumental feat after so many years of illness.

Eric’s mother Audrey said: “When you look back years ago when he was lying about in his bed and really ill, we never thought we would see this day that he was so fit again. Hopefully it will give lots of other ME sufferers or any other illness hope.

After 23 months, 20 countries and 21,452 miles - Eric raised £10,500 for the ME association.

His next target is to reach his target of £12,000 for the charity.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

I remember him, can't believe its been 2 years.
So keep on moving, moving, moving your feet
Keep on shuf-shuf-shuffling to this ghost dance beat
Just keep on walking down never ending streets
