A POSTMAN has been shortlisted for a top award after saving the life of an Edgware man.

Phil Sainsbury, 39, from Mill Hill East had just finished his delivery rounds on January 7 when he reached the house of 78-year-old Ken Netsall in Whitchurch Lane.

Being on friendly terms, the two shared a cup of tea when Ken suddenly became light-headed and began to lose consciousness.

Ken had been having what he described as "funny turns" for six months and insisted that Phil shouldn't phone an ambulance, but he ignored the protests and began dialling.

He said: "I said to him there's no way I'm having you choke on me."

When the paramedics arrived Ken's heartbeat had dropped dangerously low. He was rushed to hospital where he was immediately fitted with a pace maker.

Ken said: "Phil was absolutely superb, if it hadn't been for him I would have kicked the bucket."

His wife, Shirley Netsall, who had been visiting a friend at the time, wrote to the Royal Mail to commend Phil for saving her husband's life.

The Royal Mail awards will recognise contribution by post men in the categories of bravery, community and fundraising.

The top prize for Postman of the Year is a £3,000 holiday. Ken has been short-listed and will receive £100.
