A Taunton man was surprised to receive a parcel last week ... it was posted nearly a year ago.

Security guard Jared Colcough, 19, of Fowler Street, a former member of Taunton Air Cadets, bought a BB gun while on holiday in Spain in April last year.

He said: “I didn’t want the hassle of taking it through with my luggage in the airport.

“It was a very good price considering what I’d have paid in the UK – I paid 50 euros and it would have been more than double that here.

Jared said he packed the gun in a box with several stamps and it eventually arrived on March 24.

He didn’t know whether it had been held up in Spain or England, adding: “I assume it had just been lying in Customs for months – it had a stamp from June on it and had been opened.

“It has a lot of metal, so it was quite heavy.

“I’ll be using it for hunting and target shooting.”

A Royal Mail spokesman said: “It used to be possible to send airguns and BB guns, but since January, 2010, there has been an international restriction preventing the sending of firearms.

“In relation to our own policy on items that can be sent internally in the UK, airguns or BB guns can be sent, but are characterised under restricted items.

“Customers should check with our customer services department or at their local post office what can and can’t be posted.”
