Royal Mail boss Adam Crozier has quit with a £2million bonus despite doubts over a crucial peace deal with workers.

Up to 130,000 posties begin voting today on the radical agreement, which includes a three-year
pay deal and a shorter working week.

But, despite the sweeteners and support from leaders of the Communication Workers Union, there is no guarantee that they will back the agreement thrashed out after a series of strikes.

Many posties are furious that they will be forced to work later on Saturdays and deliver more “junk mail” for less money.

Yet Crozier left on April 1, the day after the three-year bonus scheme had reached its conclusion.

It means the 46-year-old will have had almost a month off by the time he takes up his new job as ITV chief executive on April 26.

Crozier is not the only director to quit. Alan Cook, the former Post Office boss, left the same day and is believed to be in line for a £1m pay-out from the same bonus scheme. One CWU source described Crozier’s decision to leave before the ballot result as “cynical”.

It also creates a power vacuum at the company which is highly unlikely to be able to appoint a replacement before the election.

long enough to be certain
of picking up his bonus and then jumped ship.

“I think a lot of people will view it as pretty cynical.

“Heaven knows who will pick up the pieces if the vote goes the wrong way.”

The CWU has been working hard to ensure that doesn’t happen with leaders Billy Hayes and Dave Ward lobbying branches, writing to members and even filming a DVD.

They claim the offer, which also pledges to keep 75% of jobs full-time, shows the company accepts it can no longer simply
bulldoze through changes.

A Royal Mail spokesman confirmed that Crozier had left, but refused to comment on his bonus, saying details would be in the annual report.
