Postmen suspended on suspicion of stealing thousands

Two local postmen have been suspended on suspicion of stealing “thousands of pounds”.

It is understood the two are believed to have been "pilfering", undetected, from mail for around five years.

A former postman, who prefers to remain anonymous, said: "I find it strange that a postman pilfering the mail can do so undetected for about 5 years and steal thousands of pounds over this period.

"I have had several items disappear in the postal system recently which has caused me financial loss."

Royal Mail has refused to confirm the allegations and refused to confirm the names of the two postmen given to Rochdale Online, saying only: "We don't discuss individual personal issues."

"Royal Mail has a zero tolerance approach to any dishonesty and that stance is shared by the overwhelming majority of postmen and women, who are honest and hardworking and who do all they can to protect the mail and deliver it safely.

"We will always seek to prosecute the tiny minority of people who abuse their position of trust."
