A NEW Stornoway sorting office is on the cards with the submission of an application for planning permission for new build on the Sandwick Road site.
The existing sorting office was extensively damaged in a blaze in November 2007. It was then relocated to a temporary new home in Rigs Road where mail for Lewis and Harris has been handled ever since.
Royal Mail are asking for consent to demolish the fire damaged building on Sandwick Road and erect a new custom-built mail sorting facility.
A Royal Mail spokesperson said: "The planning application is for a new building on the original site. This proposal is one of a few options Royal Mail is considering at the moment for our operation in Stornoway. Royal Mail hopes to be in any new building sometime in 2011."
