A PAIR of postmen are preparing to swap their bicycles for running shoes.

Darren Willey and Kevin Stevens, who both work for Colchester’s Royal Mail delivery office in Eastgate are being supported by their colleagues and families as they prepare to embark on next month’s London marathon.

For Mr Willey, 35, of Langdale Drive, Highwoods, it will be his first attempt of the 26-mile run.

He will be running for the MS Society which has supported his dad, Richard, 62, a sufferer of Multiple Sclerosis, which is a neurological condition.

The charity has been a useful source of information for all the family to understand more about it.

Richard, also of Colchester, started to suffer symptoms of the illness in 2000 when he started to struggle with walking and was diagnosed a short time after.

It has resulted in him using walking sticks to get around but he is right behind his son as he nervously prepares for the big day.

Mr Willey said: “I am confident and nervous, I have done a half marathon but to go to a full marathon is a big step. The guys at work are really pushing us and they are making it fun.”

The father-of-two will supported on the day by his family including partner, Julie Pettican.

He hopes to raise £700 for the charity.

Mr Stevens is using his experience as a first time London marathon runner last year, to encourage his colleague.

The 31-year-old of Mountbatten Drive, Colchester, is not running for a charity this time but last year raised £1,000 for Sense.

He said: “We are probably getting to our peak fitness now so I am quite confident and I want to beat last year’s time of 4 minutes, 17 seconds.”

Mr Steven’s wife, Leanne, is due to give birth to their second child two weeks after the event.

He added: “I just hope she can hold on.”
