Postmen accused of adding to local litter

Litter left by the postman was under discussion at last night's partnerships and communities meeting in Plasnewydd.

Residents complained to local authorities about the number of red rubber bands, used to hold post together, discarded around their streets by local postmen.

Plasnewydd resident Jonathan Isaac said: "The postmen with their plastic bands are leaving them strewn all over the place. They chuck their stuff everywhere. We cannot let commercial organisations contribute to litter."

After contacting Royal Mail directly, Isaac told me he had gone on a one-man guerilla campaign to get the message across to individual postmen – leaving messages on post bags and re-posting the elastic bands back into post boxes.

A spokesperson for Royal Mail in Cardiff said:

"Royal Mail regularly stresses to its delivery officers the importance of avoiding litter and the vast majority of our rubber bands are recycled, with millions being re-used every week. However, specific, repetitive instances of littering by delivery officers should be reported to Royal Mail Customer Management on 08457 740 740."

Chair of the pact meeting Martin Gower informed residents of the local Roath Acting Together litter pick as a way to combat problems with litter. "People were taking notice of what we were doing," he said. "We need more volunteers."

Parking issues were also a hot topic at the pact meeting. Sergeant Alun Williams explained how Cardiff's traffic wardens will converge on City Road today to target motorists parking illegally. The area is a particular problem zone for parking with large numbers of business workers and students adding to traffic and road issues for local businesses and residents.

Some residents also asked police to repeat the targeted operation on Keppoch street on Roath market days but police community support officers assured residents measures were in place to increase the presence of traffic wardens in the area while the market is on.

At the pact meeting new PCSO Kirsty from Merthyr Tydfil was also introduced to residents.

Plasnewydd??? This, to my knowledge, is an area of Cardiff, just outside of the City Centre. Not far from the lovely Civic Centre.

I remember there being a "Private Road" there, which has exclusive housing, if this is the place in question. ( I could be wrong...)

There's not a house in the private part that's under about 2 Million, probably. Scrolled arch way to enter the road, gravel drives, ornate gardens.
Like something out of an American movie directors "ideal" Brit/Limey home.

I'm amazed they even let posties deliver there, for fear of bringing down the area. LOL!

Sounds like this Jonathan Isaac geezer has too much time on his hands. I pray to God that I don't turn into something like him when I join him down the dole office. You'd think he use all his spare time in trying to get himself a job, wouldn't you?

mmmmm millions of elastic bands being reused every week, the quality of them is so poor millions end up in the bin more like!!!

'we cannot let commercial organisations contribute to litter'' this topic of elastic bands has been covered to the point of death---although it's not right to drop them all over the place---they are just a miniscule contribution to the amount of rubbish littering our streets--these people should get a life,bands won't attract rats and other disease carrying animals in the way discarded food , puke,and other unmentionable substances we plod our way through will.
