A THIEVING postman who stole money from hundreds of children's birthday cards has been jailed for six months.
Married father-of-four Simon Hambleton admitted stealing more than 100 cards over a year instead of delivering them on his round in his home village of Cudworth, near Barnsley.
Sheffield Crown Court heard that Hambleton, of Jackson Street, Cudworth stole one or two cards every few days. They often contained £10 or £20.
Jailing the 29-year-old, Judge Alan Goldsack said of the thefts from children: "It's not so much the value as the distress and disappointment caused as well as the breach of trust involved."
When interviewed by police Hambleton said he ran into financial difficulties over a car loan and ended up owing a large sum of money.
Laura Marshall, mitigating, said that he committed the thefts "out of desperation" and that they were wholly out of character.
But Judge Goldsack told Hambleton that he had breached a position of trust and that when postmen steal they must be seen to go to prison.

Not many jobs get you a prison term for theft as a first offence - our job is a serious line of work - and really undervalued by a lot of people -one thing I know - we should be on a lot more than less than £9 an hour.TrueBlueTerrier wrote:http://www.yorkshirepost.co.uk/news/Pos ... 6175351.jp

Good enough for the waster.
As if we don't get enough crap thrown at us, day in and day out, from useless lino's, now we've got one of our own who's stealing
He deserves everything he's got coming, and don't give me that crap about being on hard times. We all get tarred with this brush now

IF he need more money he should do overtime. I mean 1 week of overtime after normal walk can get him extra 150 pounds a month.
