Petition demands sorting office stays in Calne

Rumours that the Calne Sorting Office will be moved more than ten miles away have been met with fury in the town.

A petition is circulating in shops and businesses asking Royal Mail chief executive Adam Crozier to ensure the depot remains open.

It follows rumours that a feasibility study had been carried out in light of the ending of the lease on the sorting office in the High Street.

However, rumours of a move have been denied by the Royal Mail.

Town mayor Howard Marshall is backing the petition set up by councillor Mercy Baggs.

He said: “It is a problem if, like me, you are at work all day and suffer from the ever increasing problem of cards being left telling you that a parcel could not be delivered, or your letter could not be delivered because the postage paid was not sufficient.

“Instead of just popping down to the town – a five minute job – you will now have to find time between 5am and noon to go to Wootton Bassett to collect what should be delivered.

“We must fight this new move to further destroy the wellbeing of this town.”

Coun Baggs set up the petition to let Royal Mail know of the feelings of the town’s residents.

“I just do not understand how the people of Calne will cope with having to travel to Wootton Bassett,” she said. “We need to make it clear how we feel about this before it is too late.”

She said that, if the sorting office had to move, it could go onto Porte Marsh Industrial Estate.

A Royal Mail spokesman said: “At present, there is no feasibility study for Calne delivery office nor have we any plans regarding the office.”
