POSTIE GEORGE CALLS IT A DAY

A WELL-KNOWN character in Monifieth, local postie George Hilliand, North Bank Street, has retired from the Royal Mail after almost 30 years pounding the pavements of the burgh as a delivery man.

A native of the town, he attended Seaview Primary School and Carnoustie Junior Secondary School before taking up a post as a trainee salesman with Robertson's furnishers in Barrack Street, Dundee.

However, the work did not particularly appeal and after about three years George signed on for a career in the Army. He served with the Royal Engineers for about six years with postings in the UK and abroad.

When he came back to Monifieth he joined the staff of the Post Office, initially at the Ferry Post Office, now a pub.

He later worked from the West Pitkerro sorting office but was always the man on the ground in Monifieth.

George has suffered from ill health for some time and has taken early retirement on health grounds.

He is chairman of the Monifieth branch of the Royal British Legion Scotland and is an elder of Monifieth Parish Church.

He is a keen bowler but has had little success, except for having been the Monifieth Bowling Club junior champion, as he says: "Many years ago!".

George remarried in 2003 and he and wife, Laura, a Broughty lass, tied the knot at South Church

Yes, we wish him well but sadly "almost 30 years pounding the pavements" will most likely have rendered his body too knackered to enjoy retirement.

workmate of mine-george hillian it is-body simply couldnt take much more of the job, he was knackered, one of the old style guys, who only wanted to do the job, give the public a service, but sadly, the job and the tough new working conditions took its toll.
Used to wear the old peaked hat at xmas, george took all sorts of tips, we reckon he took switch, visa an mastercard donations also, very very popular wi all his customers, as he had seen growing up on his round, he never moved to easier rounds, preferring to stay delivering on the round he lived on.
As said afore, hes better off away from it now, all the best woolfie, a good lad.

cheers, seen him yesterday, and like those who have gone before, he looks amazingly diferent to when he worked there.
Im convinced your mental state changes as soon as you exit the gate for the last time, he looked more at ease wi himself yesterday, and seemed glad to be away from the stresses of the job.
