A ROYAL Mail employee in Stroud has been dismissed after officials discovered a stockpile of undelivered post from up to three months ago.
Personal documents, cheques and Christmas cards are among the delayed items which have now been posted at homes in and around Bowbridge Lane, Stroud.
Now residents and businesses, who have only received some of their missing mail, fear they could fall victim to identify fraud.
Chris and Tracy Isacc, who run the marketing agency the Isacc Partnership from their home in Cowle Road, received Christmas cards, cheques, bank statements and bills – all originally sent in December.
The couple have now also just received Tesco vouchers which were only valid for Christmas shopping.
And they have discovered that a letter from December containing their internet banking details has not yet arrived.
Co-owner Chris Isacc said: "It is annoying and a bit scary because you always hear about identify fraud and I would like to know where all my post has been and gone.
The problem started in November when deliveries became increasingly irregular and some post went missing.
Residents could not contact anyone at the Salmon Springs delivery depot so they complained to Royal Mail which explained that an investigation was underway.
Householders recently received plastic bags containing an apology letter from delivery office manager Steve Clarke and some of their missing post, which was still unopened.
However, some items are still missing, including cheques, tax documents and products ordered from a catalogue.
A Royal Mail spokesman said: "An employee from the Stroud delivery office has been dismissed following a Royal Mail investigation and the subsequent discovery of a quantity of undelivered mail.
"Royal Mail has a zero tolerance approach to any dishonesty and that stance is shared by the overwhelming majority of postmen and women, who are honest and hardworking.
"We will always seek to prosecute the tiny minority of people who abuse their position of trust.
"All of the recovered mail has now been delivered. Customers with concerns should contact our customer services team on 0845 7740 740.
"Royal Mail apologises to those who have been affected."
A police spokesman said Royal Mail had its own team which first investigates alleged criminal activity and had not yet brought anything to their attention.
