A former sub postmaster at a post office in Cambridgeshire has admitted stealing £28,597 from Royal Mail.

Graham Warnes, 55, who worked at Fowlmere, near Royston, Hertfordshire, pleaded guilty to a charge of theft between August 2007 and August 2009.

Luton Crown Court heard he has paid a substantial amount of the money back.

Warnes, of Westfield Road, Fowlmere, was granted bail. He is due to appear before the same court to be sentenced later this month.

A FORMER sub-postmaster has pleaded guilty to stealing £28,597 from Royal Mail.

Graham Warnes, 55, who used to work at the post office at Fowlmere, admitted the theft when he appeared at Luton Crown Court yesterday.

He was granted bail until he is sentenced in three weeks’ time.

Warnes, of Westfield Road, Fowlmere, was said to have repaid a substantial sum of the money stolen.

Kevin McCartney, defending said: "He has substantial support from the community and some villagers have offered him loans of money to pay the compensation."

The charge covers the period between August 1, 2007 and August 26, 2009.

The post office closed following his arrest but a new postal service will soon resume in the village for two hours a day at the Queen’s Head pub in Long Lane.
